High value creation by the congress and event market in Darmstadt

A recent study attests huge growth potential to the Congress site Darmstadt. The city has the potential to develop into “one of the leading convention destinations in the area of science events in Germany.” According to the analysis some 5,900 events were held in Darmstadt in 2009, which led to an overall net sales volume of more than 106 million Euros. “The economic power of this event segment is by far not yet fully exploited,” the summary of the investigation says. It comes from the European Institute for the Meetings Industry at the Hartz University, Wernigerode.

According to the analysis multiday conference participants spend around 483, - € per head in Darmstadt. “In 2009 alone the darmstadtium was responsible for an immediate purchasing power inflow (with approx. 60,000 visitors) of approximately 29 million Euros,” said darmstadtium-CEO Klaus Krum-rey.
Conference and seminar guests with a daily output of around 146, - € need to be added to this figure. Thus, with around 100,000 visitors last year, 14.6 million Euros flow back into the city. This total sum of 43 million Euros flow, to a large extent, into the hotel and the restaurant industries, followed by retail, road transport and entrance fees.
A further € 1.6 million from the entire event market flow directly back into the city of Darmstadt in the form of taxes and fees.
