The council of the city of Heidelberg confirmed the decision of the jury of the architectural design competition “extension City Hall” on 11th March 2010 and decided that the further planning will be realised using the drafts of the first prize winner.
The civic centre expansion’s aim is to be able to conduct medium size congresses with up to 1,200 participants in Heidelberg. An extension will in future make it possible to hold congresses and cultural events at the same time.
The council decision will end a two-decade debate and planning process for the construction of a conference centre in Heidelberg. Through the expansion, Heidelberg Marketing GmbH expects to increase the number of meeting and convention attendees at the Heidelberg Stadthalle from 40,000 to 100,000.
