European Association of Event Centres (EVVC)

The EVVC represents about 700 event centres of all kinds and sizes in Germany and Europe.
Event organisers and supply companies supplement the association’s broad range, thus making the EVVC the most versatile communications network within the sector.

Sunny outlook: Max Schmeling Halle is the public building with the largest photovoltaic plant in Berlin

As if it had waited especially for the occasion, after nearly 20 days, the sun blinked through the clouds in time for the inauguration of the photovoltaic system at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. Berlin's mayor Klaus Wowereit and Michael Geisler, director of the Berlin Energy Agency (BEA) gave the starting signal for organic energy production on the roof of the Berlin Event Hall gave on 21st January 2010. As such, the system is currently the largest solar power plant on a public building in the German capital.

The 1,064 installed photovoltaic modules with an area of 1,749 square meters can produce up to 250 kilowatts of electricity. The annual output amounts to 220 megawatts during average sunshine hours, which corresponds to the electricity needs of around 110 households. The system prevents 220 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The installation of the photovoltaic system is an essential complement to the existing energy concept of the Max-Schmeling-Halle. Both through the cogeneration system in the thermal power plant, which has already been integrated since the construction of the Max-Schmeling-Halle in the early 1990s and is powered by gas, and through the newly installed solar system CO2 is saved. As such, the event hall sustainably contributes to Berlin’s energy concept 2020.

The PV system uses polycrystalline framed solar modules at the Max-Schmeling-Halle. They have been put on frames and fixed with concrete weights on the roof of the hall. The Berlin Energy Agency has financed the plant and operates it; the owner of the building is the federal state of Berlin, with Velomax GmbH as the operator of the hall. The modules are all made in Germany, manufactured in a solar plant in Wismar by Centrosolar AG.
