There is reason to rejoice in the Max-Schmeling-Halle: since mid-March a smiley greets all visitors to the catering facilities. The Smiley stands for superior quality and hygiene at the 13 Gastro stands operated by the Berlin Velomax Hallenbetriebs GmbH. The basis for the award is the review by the official food control, which inspects all areas of the company from work wear to waste disposal. Only if the Authority’s strict criteria are met by at least 90 percent will the company receive the coveted certificate and use the smiling ambassadors to advertise their “clean work”. The Max-Schmeling-Halle excelled, and scored top marks in the assessment.
By participating in the Smiley system, the Max-Schmeling-Halle is one of the pioneers in the capital, as the business model is still limited to the district of Pankow and all audits are voluntary. The initiator is the District Office, which sees the project as a means of creating incentives for companies to stick to regulations in the area of official food controls and ultimately increasing the safety of consumers.
