Conventions are an important economic factor for Nuremberg. This is the result of the survey “The congress and event market Nürnberg” of the prestigious European Institute for conference management (EITW), that was commissioned by the City of Nuremberg and the CCN CongressCenter Nürnberg.
“A gross turnover of 480 million Euros and tax revenues of around 6 million Euros underline that we must continue to be active in Nuremberg. The gap in our portfolio that was found by the survey is in the segment of meetings with 500 to 1,000 people and poses a new challenge”, said Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs, Dr. Roland Fleck, summing up the main results of the survey.
The meeting and convention market has developed in Nuremberg into an independent industry and is firmly established. As a result the CCN Congress Center Nürnberg was able to double its turnover since 2004 from 5.4 million Euros to 11 million Euros in 2010 and has become a veritable magnet for large conventions. “The Congress Center Nürnberg has achieved a top position in Germany in recent years – especially on the market for large conferences. Now we need to make sure that we put this success on a broader basis that is perceptible for the whole of Nuremberg”, said CCN manager Friedhelm Lenz, who is, together with Dr. Fleck, one of the fathers of the Nuremberg Congress Initiative.
Challenge for the location: expanding capacities
The market survey shows clearly that the Nuremberg capacities do not offer an optimal hall and room concept for events ranging from 500 to 1000 people. Accordingly, the market share of these events in Nuremberg is about one quarter below the national average. Schreiber: “due to this gap among the surveyed operators an estimated 330 events with 110,000 participants are lost. Every other request in Nuremberg ends with a cancellation - most of the cancellations are ue to the capacities according to the operators. Therefore, an essential building block is to create new capacities in the mid segment. The addition of more hotel capacities should likewise be reviewed”.
