Energy saving, emission reduction, resource conservation and cost savings begin in the small and mundane. The management of a company must take the lead for the issue and motivate the base to rethink their actions. The “Green Globe” certification is particularly well suited for adopting such a process. The Board has to intensively asses the issue of certification together with the divisional and depart-mental managers and individual employees, based on over one hundred and fifty requirements from all relevant fields. In this way, many obvious and just as many hidden points within the own company are brought to light as part of a dynamic team effort that automatically raises awareness and at the same time shows efficient solutions. At the end of this organic and collaborative process is the “Green Globe” certifi-cate for the venue. This award not only gives the company an identity, but also inspires to continue, because the results are reviewed every two years by independent experts. At the Musik- und Kon-gresshalle in Lübeck we were able to, over the course of only two years, not only achieve a positive effect for the workforce, but also achieve cost savings of more than 120,000 Euros (in 2011 approximately 200,000 €) for the company - after the initial enthusi-asm for sustainable development we were able to establish a complex environmental management system over a short space of time. There can be no stronger argument for the “Green Globe” certificate!
Resource conservation in detail
In terms of water management, since 2008, all sani-tary facilities including the kitchens (no dripping faucets, water pressure, correcting the water pres-sure, installation of water-throughput limiters) were reviewed and two broken pumps were replaced. As a result, the water consumption could be reduced by almost 80%. Even the MUK initially thought that the result was based on a faulty meter, but it was checked three times by the municipal energy sup-plier - these savings were actually achieved.
In the electricity sector a more diligent use was mainly achieved through sensitized behaviour and awareness of the employees and other service providers. New devices are constantly checked for energy efficiency. Lamps were switched over to LED. As a result, we were able to achieve savings of almost 30% up until now. Since 2010, the house obtains green electricity supplies (50% water power, 50% renewable energy).
In the area of tele-heating we had to accept a slight price increase of 6% due to the cold and long winter 2010, but due to price negotiations it was possible to compensate this increase, as the municipal energy supplier served us energy from an old BKHW. Without focusing on the energy issue the management would have seen no reason to negotiate. To date, savings of up to 20% are expected.
By commissioning a new central building control system electricity and tele-heating consumption can be further optimized. It is then expected to achieve savings of more than 200,000 €.
